Types of Digital Cameras and Definitions
Before digital existed you would find the traditional film cameras. Digital photography is now the standard as traditional analog photography rapidly losing ground (except for in a niche areas). Growing up in this transition era, I remember how time consuming and expensive it was to have a film camera. The costs would include buying film and sending film in to get processed (a very cumbersome exercise).
Apart from that, there was also trying to figure out when the first shot would take on the film (sometimes it was a few clicks of the button before it would register), making sure you accidentally didn't open the film compartment before it was finished, or going through the process of rewinding the film (sometimes manual and sometimes automatic). It's not that some of these old vintage SLR cameras aren't cool, it's just there that there are some incredible options and deals available in the digital camera market right now. |

I have found it much easier to transfer the photos from an SD card or via WiFi on a digital camera to one of my wireless printers for top quality picture prints at a fraction of the price. Even using the camera on a tablet is totally worth it as I've seen firsthand how easy it is to pick up a top rated printer for an iPad, Galaxy or any digital camera for that matter. But keep in mind that you'll need to store your tablet in something that allows some level of protection. I typically put mine in a camera backpack when going on a short vacation with the family (such as the ones featured below). Once digital cams starting getting traction in the mid-1990s it wouldn't be long before they eventually replaced the traditional film counterparts.
Here are some other benefits to using a digital camera over analog:
Digital Cameras come in a variety of different types. The purpose of this section is not to get into which one is better, but to identify the different types and help you realize that each one has it's own benefits and functions. I used a standard point and shoot camera for taking many of the photos you see on the La Paz Dentistry Facebook Page - a Dentist in Laguna Hills, CA. In general, a digital camera means that images can be digitally embedded and stored on a number of different platforms including video, smartphones, DSLRs, point and shoot, and more.
Here are some other benefits to using a digital camera over analog:
- No risk of losing pictures if you accidentally expose the film to light
- Getting immediate feedback on your photos (you don't have to wait for the film to get processed)
- Copies of the photos are perfect with digital cameras (as opposed to analog where copies lose fidelity each time one is made)
- It negates the difficult process of finding the right type of film (speeds) for the various conditions
- Controls like focusing and control of the exposure are automatic
- Editing is also easy, and with some of the more advanced digital cameras, you can do some of the editing directly from the camera

Pixels and why they are Important
The megapixel (MP) is measured in millions and is a term that measures the amount of pixels that a camera can capture. It is not uncommon to find 12MP cameras for sale almost anywhere. So why do photographers want higher megapixels? The more megapixels, the sharper the image. Where this really makes a difference is when you want to print out large images as lower megapixel pictures will turn out grainy the larger you go. For more on megapixels see this post.
DSLR Cameras
DSLR stands for digital single-lens reflex and basically takes the existing SLR technology and works on top of that by adding a digital imaging sensor. This is because when you're taking pictures, light is directed towards the viewfinder by the use of a mirror. Even with DSLRs you'll find different variations of the cameras including fixed lens, SLR like, and interchangeable lens.
There are auto and manual focus options, the ability to change lenses, and now you can even take high definition video. The great part of about these is the ability to see the photo once you take it on the LCD screen (cutting down on the guessing part of whether or not someone blinked or the shot was blurry).

Other Interchangeable Lens Cameras
While still a small part of the overall camera market, Mirrorless Cameras (like DSLRs) are have interchangeable lenses. The body of the mirrorless camera is usually thinner than a DSLR due to the lack of a mirror that is mechanical. The first version was released in '08 and are becoming increasingly popular among photographers who want the look of a point and shoot but have interchangeable lenses like a DSLR. Here are some examples of mirrorless cameras.
Point and Shoot Cameras
Point and Shoot Cameras have fixed lenses and are designed to be super simple to use and operate. Don't be fooled by the name, these are more than a one button type of camera. Some of the point and shoots today can do almost as much as the DSLRs but they are usually a fraction of the price. The on screen menus, portable size, and ability to connect via WiFi for printing and sharing make them a viable solution for those looking to travel light. Also they are known for being simple to use and ideal for capturing a quick photo at a sports game, family event, etc.
